Huawei Mate 9 won't be unveiled at company's September event

While we were expecting to see the Mate 8 successor at Huawei's September 1 event, looks like that won't be the case. According to Bruce Lee, a mobile product line manager at the Chinese company, the Mate 9 won't be made official so early - that's in context with the fact that the Mate 8 arrived towards the end of last year.

In case you missed, the Mate 9 has already been subject of some rumors, with a recent one suggesting that it will be powered by the homegrown, and yet-to-be-announced Kirin 960 chipset with octa-core CPU, and sport a 20MP dual rear camera setup.

So, assuming that Lee is correct (we don't have any reason not to believe him), what to expect from Huawei's September event? Well, remember that new Huawei phone - said to be Mate 8 variant with Force Touch display - that was recently spotted on TENAA? Who knows, it may be the star of the event.

We already briefed you about the changes included in MIUI 8, and just recently it wasrevealed that the ROM will also bring along the split-screen multitasking feature, also known as multi-window mode.
But before MIUI 8.0 arrives, the company will release version 7.5 of the ROM that contains some of the new features included in version 8.0. In fact, the roll-out for China stable ROM is set for today (should have already begun) - head to the source link below for more details

Amazon has started offering slashed prices on selected unlocked phones with ads

If you have ever shopped around for a Kindle in the US or UK, then you are surely in the know about Amazon's special offers deals. It is quite simple really - you get the device at a reduced price and in return, Amazon gets to put some advertisements on it.

Overall it is quite a good deal, as the online giant does really try to make said adds quite relevant and not that intrusive. Now, in a new move, Amazon is attempting to expand the special offers program on to SIM-free mobile devices, which it sells quite a bit of as it is.

The program has already launched within the US with a pair of devices - the BLU R1 HD and the Moto G4. Both come with a $50 price reduction, which brings down the BLU R1 HD to just $49.99 and the Moto G4 to $149.99 (or $179.99 for the bigger 32GB version). As an additional launch promo, Amazon is even offering an extra $25 off the Moto today, for paying Prime members, which adds up to $124.99.

And, as already mentioned, the only downside is that the units will come with deals and ads on the lockscreen. However, judging from the screenshots, they look quite unobtrusive. The only other catch we can think off is the potential of losing vital storage space, as Amazon also mentions that there will be some bloat pre-installed as well, possibly even as system apps. But, none of that is really that big of a hustle if you root the device.

The breakthrough pricing on unlocked smartphones is supported by personalized offers and ads, including deals and product recommendations, displayed on the phone’s lockscreen. When a customer sees an offer, they can tap to learn more about it or simply unlock their phone to dismiss.
The whole initiative does look very promising and could potentially give Amazon a big edge on the SIM-free smartphone market. Hopefully, this initial field test will prove a success and will lead to many more "special offers" devices on the site.

Samsung Galaxy Note7 cases confirm it will have a curved display

Less then 24 hours ago a new rumor claimed to shed some light on certain details regarding Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note7 - namely that it will be outed on August 2 (something we've heard before), and that it will sport a 3,600 mAh battery. But what about its screen?

So far we've had a lot of reports saying that Samsung opted to go with a dual-edge display for the Note7. Then again, there were some other mumblings telling us that wouldn't be the case. So what to believe?

Samsung Galaxy Note7 cases by Olixar

Well, if the renders showing these newly outed cases for the phone are any indication, then it looks like the Note7 will indeed come with a curved display. The cases in question have been listed by a well-known UK-based mobile accessory retailer, and they're made by a brand that's got a full line of such products for most handsets out there.

And, as you can see, the Note7 depicted in these cases definitely has that trademark dual-curved touchscreen, a la the S7 edge. But it also has a stylus (with the slot in its usual place on the bottom side of the device), as you would expect.

Speaking of things you should expect, the Note7's resolution is going to be QHD (with a size of 5.7" or 5.8"), while other rumored internals include 6GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, an iris scanner, IP68 water and dust resistance, a USB Type-C port, the same cameras as the S7 and S7 edge, and a new Exynos chipset with octa-core CPU (replaced with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821/823 in some markets).

LeEco Le Max 2 gets a version with 128GB of storage, new Force Gold color

Well, LeEco's previously teased event that took place today wasn't about a new smartphone powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821/823 after all. Instead, the Chinese company unveiled a new color option for the three handsets it announced back in April.

It's called Force Gold and you can see it below on the Le Max 2, which has so far been sold only in rose gold, silver, and grey. Force Gold will be offered for the Le 2 and Le 2 Pro too.

Additionally, LeEco has outed a new top of the line version of the Le Max 2. This one comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage, in order to match some of its competitors spec-for-spec. Previously, the highest-end Le Max 2 had 6GB of RAM and just 64GB of storage. Nothing else is changing about the phone, however.

The Le Max 2 now starts at CNY 2,099 ($316, €284) with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal space. The model with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage goes for CNY 2,499 ($376, €339), while the new 6GB + 128GB combo is priced at CNY 2,799 ($421, €379). All of these prices are valid for China only, of course.

iPhone 7: Touch-sensitive home button on way, say analysts

MacRumors says the once-unreliable rumours are now plausible in the grand scheme of things. It is strongly suggested that Apple will remove the headphone jack on the iPhone 7, a move that, when combined with a new home button, should lead to a device with strong water resistance. A flush home button is now "not a rumor that seems entirely out of the question", it says.

However, continues the site, previous sources with highly reliable track records – such as KGI analyst Ming Chi-Kuo – have said this year's iPhone won't introduce many new features ahead of a radical overhaul in 2017. A force-sensitive home button would be a major change so the word of more sources is needed to resolve some of the conflicting rumours.

Best VR headsets to buy in 2016, whatever your budget

The age of virtual reality is upon us (again) with a torrent of devices and content launching throughout 2016.

There has been a buzz around virtual reality (VR) for the past few years. Some of this has come from the lengthy development of devices like Oculus Rift, but also through a growing interest in what we'll be able to get VR to do in the modern era.

The idea of VR isn't new. It's been circulating in the tech space for a number of years, but recently, the technology has broken through some of the long-standing barriers. Enabling access has helped, with devices like Google's Cardboard opening the door for anyone with a smartphone, right up to demonstrating what a fully-fledged premium system like HTC Vive will be capable of. We now have the power in home computers for lifelike virtual environments and this makes it a much more exciting time for VR.

So, without further ado, we've listed some of the top VR systems available. Their prices range dramatically, and some haven't actually been officially launched yet, but they're all worth being aware of, as you'll be seeing a lot more of VR in 2016.

Oculus Rift

Oculus Rift has probably commanded more headlines than any other VR system. First launched as a Kickstarter project and then acquired by Facebook, Oculus Rift is one of the most exciting VR systems you'll find.

The system comprises a headset that's loaded with sensors, offering a display for each eye and integrated headphones. It comes with a camera to add more movement detection information and initially ships with an Xbox One controller prior to bespoke Oculus Touch controllers launching later in 2016. You will also need a high-spec PC to run Oculus Rift, however, and this isn't included in the £500 asking price for the kit.
